Obituary

It is with a heavy heart we announce that The Most High has heard and elevated our beloved Helen Westray Butler to receive her heavenly gifts. He has ended her earthly journey.

Helen Westray-Butler affectionately known as "Lil"  peacefully transitioned from this earthly realm to collect her heavenly crown on Thursday, April 10, 2025 after battling Cancer. Her big brother Artis called her "baby child".

Helen was born on December 2, 1958, to the late Walter E. Westray and Helen Westray, both of whom preceded her ascent, along with her siblings, Ethel (Tiny), Joe Louis, Dorothy, Johnny, Walter, Jr and David.

Helen, a native Washingtonian, received her formal education from the District of Columbia school system. She worked at Hogate's in Southwest,DC as a waitress. There she met her life-mate, Carl Butler. Together they created a family raising their twins, Shawn and LaShawn.

Helen loved thrifting. She worked at the thrift store where she met and became best friends with Tenneh Watson. She was also employed at Nordstroms Department store which she later retired due to her health.

Helen's love for God was evident in her walk, although she had no problem speaking truth and putting you in your place. She loved to joke and watch for your reaction. Family gatherings made her appreciate life. She loved going out to eat and was a great dancer. She was an aspiring hand-dancer.

Helen was a big cheerleader, encouraging and praising others. She would help anyone she saw in need.  She valued nothing more than being a mother and keeping her family together as one. Her granddaughter was her pride and joy, although sometimes a pain her love was equal to none.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory loving memory her husband, Carl Butler; beloved children; Shawn and LaShawn Butler; granddaughter, Makiya Reeves; stepson, Cornelius Butler; Siblings, Sadie, Artis, Eunice and Mary; a host of nieces, nephews, other Relatives and friends.

Helen will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Celebrating the life of Helen W. Butler
